Lordship's Despatch No. 304 of the 11th. ultimo, I have

the honour to report the following cases have recently

occurred in this Colony in which an Officer has been

called upon to discharge the duties of 2 distinct offices,

neither of which was his own while the duties of his OWN

post were being performed by another Officer:-

1.

From 20th. March to January 14th.

Mr. C. A. D. Melbourne has acted as Deputy Registrar,

Supreme Court, and Assistant Superintendent of Victoria

Gaol, his substantive post as Chief Clerk at the Magistracy

being held by Mr. Bowen Rowlands. These arrangements were

made necessary by the absence on leave of Mr. R. H. A.

Craig, Assistant Superintendent of Victoria Gaol, and by

the appointment of Mr. J. H. Kemp to act as First Police

Magistrate for such period as Mr. H. H. J. Gompertz acted

as
